There has been so much excitement at Cobbers Child Care Centre as the children enjoyed one of their favourite times of the year — our Bike and Scooter Riding weeks! The children proudly brought along their own bikes and scooters to ride with their friends in a safe and supervised environment.

Throughout the experience, the children practiced important riding skills such as balancing, steering, using their brakes safely, and learning how to ride carefully around others. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they encouraged one another and celebrated their achievements together.

Safety was our biggest focus during the day. Before hopping on their bikes and scooters, the children learned that to ride safely they must always wear:

  • A properly fitted helmet 🪖

  • Enclosed shoes

  • Safe and comfortable clothing for riding

🪖 Learning All About Helmet Safety

Our focus also turned to understanding why helmets are so important. During an interactive group discussion, the children learned that our brains are the most important part of our bodies because they help us think, move, feel, and talk.

We explored how helmets protect our heads by using:

  • A hard outer shell to protect the skull

  • Soft inner foam to absorb bumps if we fall

The children practiced the important “2-2-2 Rule” for checking helmet fit:

  • 2 fingers above the eyebrows

  • 2 straps forming a “Y” shape under the ears

  • 2 fingers of space under the chin strap

The children were very excited to demonstrate their helmet safety knowledge and proudly showed their friends how to wear their helmets correctly.

Road Safety Learning 🚦

As part of our road safety discussions, the children also learned about:

  • Checking their bikes using the ABC safety check:

    • A – Air

    • B – Brakes

    • C – Chain

  • Wearing bright clothing so they can be easily seen

  • Riding in safe areas with adult supervision

  • Following simple road and bike safety rules

We also talked about safe road crossing habits using the important reminder:

“Stop, Look, Listen and Think”

The children practiced discussing when and where it is safest to cross the road and why it is important to stay close to a trusted adult near roads and car parks.

Bike Week continues to be a highlight for our children each year, providing opportunities to build confidence, coordination, friendships, and important lifelong safety skills — all while having so much fun outdoors together! 🚲✨
